Legendary Nigerian singer Charles Oputa popularly known as Charlie Boy has released a new song titled “Mumu Don Do” to mark his platinum jubilee on June 19.
The song which also featured Nigerian hip-hop singer Oritse Femi is believed to have stemmed from a movement called ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ founded by Charlie Boy to sensitize Nigerian youths on the need to seek good and efficient government in the country.
The Area Fada who is known for his punk costume consisting of leather jacket, boots, power bike said his new song is a birthday present to his fans and Nigerians as there is a need to beat awareness of positive change into the younger generation at large.
“I am giving my fans a birthday present with my song with Oritse Femi, ‘Mumu Don Do? (MDD)’
Let them go download it on YouTube and listen to it, because I still wonder, whether Nigerians mumu never do. The message is that wishes and prayers alone will not solve our problems, because God will not do for us what he expects us to do for ourselves,” Charlie Boy told News Agency of Nigeria.
The veteran singer who is also known for his massive backing of basic and civil rights lauds his contribution to the music industry which ranged from promotion of artiste in the broadcast media to helping artistes acquire intellectual property.
“I fought for respect for our artistes because I looked at the industry then and discovered that our artistes were not as colorful compared to as they are today.
“As that time, it was only 10 per cent of Nigerian music that were played in our radio and TV stations, and even in night clubs, the rest were foreign music.
“Our intellectual property were not handled right, as many artistes were unaware of what those rights were.
“Those were some of the things I set out to change, and I was able to use my goodwill and connections to effect the change.”
