Sergio Ramos overtakes Ronald Koeman as La Liga top-scoring defender

After 15 years since breaking into Spanish football topflight division, Real Madrid captain and defence maestro, Sergio Ramos has set a record as the top-scoring defender in La Liga history.

Ramos converted a spot kick to help Madrid seal a 2-1 victory over Real Soceidad and consequently placed them on top of La Liga table after 30 rounds.

The goal became his 68th goal in 486 La Liga appearances one more than Koeman who set the benchmark 25 years ago after scoring 67 goals in 192 appearances for arch-rivals Barcelona.

Since scoring his first senior career goal for Sevilla against Nacional in first round of UEFA cup dated September 2004 and thereafter switching to Real Madrid.The Spaniard has scored many important and decisive goal in his career spell.

He scored a brace against Bayern Munich in a 4-0 win that helped Madrid qualify to 2014 Champions League final followed by a stoppage time header to force extra time for Los Blancos against Atletico Madrid in the final, a match they ended up winning 4-1 after extra time.

Undoubtedly, He is one of the most decorated Real Madrid player having won 21 trophies to his name; four UEFA champions league, four La Liga, two Copa del Rey, four Spanish super cup, four FIFA club world cup and three UEFA super cup.

With his contract set to expire in 2021, former Los Blancos forward Predrag Mijatovic believes the ace defender should be offered an extension and warns against letting him off like other club legends; Raul Gonzalez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Cassilas among others.

“We cannot afford to let out experienced player help other team. Raul had great history at Real Madrid and left in a bad way, Fernando Hierro the same, Cassilas too. Now they are talking about Sergio Ramos. His contract has to be extended, two or three years, it doesn’t matter. The guy has to finish his career at Real Madrid.” Hierro told ISMAS.
