Burna Boy equals WizKid, Davido record in BET Award for Best International Act

Thanks to his Afro-fussion style which lumps a variety of indigenous genre of music; dancehall, highlife, juju music, hip-hop and R&B, a root that dates far back to the 20th century.

Nigerian music star, Damini Ebunoluwa Rex otherwise known as Burna Boy has won the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award as Best International Act in 2020.

Burna Boy made a come back from winning the award in 2019 to claiming the prize for the second time in a row on Monday morning.

He also became the first artiste to win the category in successive time since the inception in 2010. He now shares a record as most winner of the award (two best int’l act awards) with Ayo Balogun aka WizKid who won it in 2012 and 2017, and David Adeleke popularly known as Davido who also received the award in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

The annual BET Awards which is often held to celebrate achievements in entertainment and reward the brightest persons in music, sports, television, and movies could not be staged live this year due to active lockdown around the world occasioned by coronavirus pandemic and a measure of reducing the spread of the disease through mass gathering.

However, the 20th edition was held online and hosted by American actress, Amanda Seales. After being announced as winner, an inspired Burna Boy who beat British grime star, Stormzy among others in the Best Act nomination to claim the award referenced the existence of Africa while urging it descents to bring back it honor in his acceptance speech.

“Second time and I appreciate it. I will like to use this opportunity to say that sometime around 1835, there was admission to turn the nation of Africa into a dominated nation. Now is the time to return and go back to the royalty that we were because in order for black lives to matter, Africa must matter.”

Nigerian star WizKid was named as co-winner of BET HER Award with Beyonce in regards to her ground breaking song for cultural pride and female empowerment in 2019 titled ‘Brown Skin Girls’ which featured Blue Ivy, WizKid & Saint Jhn.

Fast rising Nigerian singer, Rema was also nominated for Best International New Act (viewers choice) but Zimbabwe’s Sha Sha beat the starlet to the award.
