Tottenham Appoint Ex Captain King as First Team Assistant

Ledley King has been been brought back to Tottenham Hotspur as First Team Assistant to Jose Mourinho backroom staff.

King will now replace former assistant coach and technical analyst Ricardo Formosinho, who left Spurs at the end of the season.

The new managerial role open an opportunity for King to give back to the club where he spent his whole senior career, a spell which span between 1998 and 2012.

During his 16-years at White Hart Lane, the 39-year old made 323 appearances and scored 14 goals winning English Football League cup once and clinched Premier League player of the month in September 2004.

Tottenham released a statement that: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ledley King as First Team Assistant.

“Ledley will join as a member of our first team staff, working alongside the coaches, analysts and playing squad both at the Training Centre and on matchdays. He will also take on the role of supporting our academy players as they look to step up to the first team.

“Our legendary former captain needs little introduction, having given us 13 years of sterling service as a first team player, making 323 appearances in total and lifting the League Cup at Wembley as captain in 2008. He retired in 2012 and has since continued his association through his work as a Club Ambassador.”

He has been cheerfully welcomed by Spurs’ head coach who is hopeful that King’s contribution will be very key to the club’s success next season. The Portuguese manager said: “I am extremely pleased to be welcoming Ledley into the first team group as we continue our preparations for the new season.

“He has a tremendous affinity with this football club and the fans appreciate just how much he has accomplished as a true Spurs man both on and off the pitch.

“We have developed a good relationship since I arrived, and we hope to use his experience and insight to support the work we are doing with the squad.”

Tottenham finished sixth in the Premier League, securing qualification to Europa League next season at the brink of this season. They will compete for four silverware: Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup next term.
