Nigerian basketball player Michael Ojo dies of heart attack

Nigerian basketball player Michael Olalekan Ojo died on Friday according to an announcement by Crvena zvezda.

Ojo, 27, who played the vast of his career as a center died suddenly from a heart attack during training in Belgrade, Serbia.

His former club, Crvena disclosed the death of the five big man who has won three trophies: Serbian League, Adriatic League and Adriatic Supercup since joining the club in 2018 from another Serbia based club Košarkaški klub FMP.

“KK Crvena zvezda informs the public with great sadness and regret that the former player of our club, Michael Ojo, passed away suddenly on Friday at the age of 27 in Belgrade.” the club announced.

“The sudden and shocking death of Michael Ojo deeply affected everyone: the players, coaches, management and board of the club in which he was accepted from day one, and which he accepted as his own.”

Ojo was born in Lagos before moving to United States where he began his career with Florida State University. He afterwards moved to Europe after signing with KK FMP in 2017.

Following an impressive season, 20 times national champions Crvena signed him on a two-year deal which came to a halt in June 2020.

“His official contract with KK Crvena zvezda mts expired on June 30, 2020. and the club and Michael Ojo parted ways in more than friendly relations.”
