Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay officially submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

While doing so, the four South American countries called for the tournament to return “where football was born”, 100 years after the first World Cup was held in Montevideo.

During a ceremony in Buenos Aires at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) headquarters, officials of the four countries were joined by Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).

Dominguez said he was hopeful FIFA could show a “gesture of greatness” towards the region and allow it to organise the tournament.

“The 2030 World Cup is not just another World Cup, it deserves a celebration with recognition for 100 years,” he said.

“We are convinced that FIFA has an obligation to honour the memory of those who came before us and believed in greatness and made the first World Cup.”

AFA president Claudio Tapia added: “As world champions, we carry out this launch which is the dream of all South Americans. Not only on the centenary of the first edition, but because of the passion with which we live football.”

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez made a statement on his official Twitter account saying that Bolivia would be asked to join “this dream”.

After the first edition in Uruguay, Argentina hosted the World Cup in 1978 and Chile in 1962, while Paraguay has never hosted the sport’s biggest competition.

The South American bid will compete with Spain-Portugal, who have signed a joint bid agreement, plus possible 2030 bids from Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Team Delta has maintained top spot of the concluded 2022 edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) after a review of the medals table as directed by the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Mr Sunday Dare.

Dare had inaugurated a Committee of Experts, Chaired by Retired Brig.-Gen. Emmanuel Okaro, to review the Medals Table of the 21st NSF, which was tagged “Delta 2022” following complaints of irregularities by some states.

The Committee, in its terms of reference, was to, among others, determine the shortfalls in the computation of the medals table as well as establish the exact and correct result with a view to putting an end to the complaints surrounding it.

A statement signed on Wednesday by Ismaila Abubakar, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, stated that the final medals table was released in line with the recommendations of the Committee.

“The medals table has now been rectified and approved by the Ministry,” he said.

Abubakar stated that the committee submitted that human errors occasioned by administrative laxity, inexperience, general delays, non-awareness and misapplication of the substantive Festival Rules led to the flaws observed in the earlier computed medals table.

“The full application of the Rules meant that the results from some events in Athletics, Scrabble, Weightlifting and Wresting, which did not meet the criteria for scoring, were not recorded on the reviewed medals Table.

“While in accordance with Rule 28 of the World Para Powerlifting Rules and Regulations (March 2022), only the results from ‘Best Lift Medal’ were recorded for the sport of Powerlifting.

“Consequently, it is significant to note that most of the States retained their positions on the Medals Table, thereby maintaining the status quo.

“However, some States lost some Medals as the Committee applied all extant rules guiding the organisation of the National Sports Festival as applicable in Games of this magnitude.

“In order to correct the observed anomaly and to uphold the integrity of the Festival, the Ministry will take appropriate administrative procedures to prevent future reoccurrence as recommended by the Committee.

“In the reviewed Medals Table, Delta State maintained its lead with a total of 280 Gold, 168 Silver and 120 Bronze medals, followed by Bayelsa, Edo and Oyo States, which had 106 Gold, 69 Gold and 43 Gold medals respectively.”

Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Akwa Ibom, FCT and Ogun remained in the top 10, while Zamfara, Sokoto and Jigawa states occupied the bottom of the table with zero, one, and five Medals respectively.

Oluwatobiloba “Tobi” Amusan, reigning African, Commonwealth and World Champion in the 100m hurdles, has signed a management deal with Plug Sports, a leading Nigerian-based sport management company owned by The Plug. This was made known by the management of The Plug at a briefing session with journalists on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at their office headquarters in Lagos.

Tobi Amusan is track and field athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles but also competes as a sprinter and has just recently broken multiple world records. Apart from being Nigeria’s first ever gold medallist in the championship, Amusan’s 12.06 seconds mark, wind-added (+2.5 m/s), was the first in 36 years. It was also the fourth world record set in women’s hurdles.

Unveiling the deal, Lanre Vigo, Head of Sports at The Plug, sharing his excitement at the signing of the sports star noted that it was a dream come true and that the company is incredibly happy to have Ms. Amusan onboard. “I’m indeed very thrilled to announce the signing of world record holder Tobi Amusan to Plug Sports. Plug Sports will be looking after Tobi Amusan’s off-the-field interests in Africa. Tobi is a phenomenal person/athlete myself and my team are looking forward to collaborating with her.” Vigo shared.

Speaking further, Vigo added that in the last couple of weeks, Tobi had created plenty of excitement for Nigerians and indeed Africans through her spectacular performance, aspiring young people across the globe to reach for their goals.

Born in Nigeria, Tobi hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. Her running career began at the age of 15, when she entered and won an inter-house competition in the 100m sprint. Amusan was inspired to take up the sport after defeating a runner who was exercising at the local athletics stadium that day. She began formal training. Tobi Amusan is managed by icon Management Inc. based in Atlanta, GA, USA, and is coached by Lacena Golding-Clarke.

She completed her secondary education in Nigeria at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode before relocating to the USA for her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Her parents are teachers who set the tone for her upbringing in the Nigerian town of Ijebu Ode, where she was raised in a strict scholarly environment. Her existence, as she recalls, revolved around school, sleeping, eating, and reading books.

Some other sports personalities managed by Plug Sports include soccer players Henry Onyekuru, Asisat Oshoala and Clement Ugah.

The Chief Executive Officer of AirFirst group of companies, Gbolahan Abatan has urged the elites to engage in playing of golf, describing it as a game of life.

The Airfirst CEO said this while speaking at the second golf tournament organised by the company in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

The tournament was held between  Wednesday,10, 2021 and Sunday, 14, 2021 with the winners going home with different gifts.

Abatan however urged elite to spend time in playing golf, noting that the game energises while also exercising the brain and the soul.

The Airfirst CEO added that golf has no risk like other sports.

The golfer further said if one should master the technicalities in golf, it would make one strive through life, as it incorporate business and ethical ideals.

His words: “The thing here is that I, personally, see golf as a game of life. Every aspect of your life activities reflect on golf.

“If you are a risk taker, it’ll show when you play golf. If you’re a lazy person, it’ll show. If you’re a dishonest person, it’ll show. If you’re an honest person, when you okay golf, it’ll show.

“Most businesses all over the world, when you go for business meeting, if you partners or proposed partners are golfers, you know the first thing they’ll tell you, let’s go play a round of golf.

“When you go on a golf course with them, by the time you played first, second, third hole, they already know who you are. They already know whether they’ll do business with you or not. “That is why I say golf is a game of life”, he said.

The AirFirst CEO further said, ” Secondly and on the other hand, healthwise, golf is a game you play without accident or incident. I mean, you exercise the whole of your body and your soul as well because golf gives you good health.

“And by the time you come on the golf course, you walk round, play the whole of 18 course, you’d have walked between 10 and 11 kilometers. But ordinarily, if you’re told to walk certain distance, even 5 km, you’d struggle. But when you are on a course chasing that little ball, you’d not know that you’ve covered 10/11km, and you come back, you’re healthy.

“You’ll exercise from your brain because golf is technical. You have to position yourself. You have to think the way you want the ball to be.

“So, you have to exercise your brain all the way to your toes when you play golf.

“So, because we have many people above 50 (years old) who cannot run, jog, who cannot play strainer sports like football or ling tennis or volleyball; then golf is the only game you can play.

“The retired Justice Bakr* is 95 years old. He’s a member of this gold club. He still play golf. “The Alake of Egbaland, is about 78 years old. He still play golf.”

At the end of the game, Mr Gbolahan said, “We have trophies for every categories of winners. The closing ceremony is taking place there and that is when we give a lot of gift items like household equipment like fridge, cooker, iron name it depending on the categories”.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Super Eagles of Nigeria had a private dinner with the Management of RevolutionPlus Property, the official real estate partner of the Super Eagles and other National Teams.

The event held on September 4, 2021 was attended  by the Super Eagles team,  President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnic, officials of the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF), CEO of HotSports Media Group, Taiye Ige; Super Eagles Media Officer, Femi Raji; Bukola Olopade, MD/CEO at Nilayo Sports Management Limited among others.

RevolutionPlus Property became the official real Estate Partner of the Super Eagles in June 2021 and since then the organization has been on active campaigns to support the Super Eagles, NFF and other National Teams.

During the event, the Group Managing Director of RevolutionPlus Property, Bamidele Onalaja and the Group Executive Director, Mrs. Tolulope Onalaja were delighted over the  partnership with the National Team.

They emphasized the need for the team members to invest in real estate as that is one of the most assured means of securing the future especially during their active years.

Onalaja added that “no matter where you go, you will surely return home to Nigeria; our plan as your real estate partner is to create an investment plan for you which will safeguard both your future and assets. This way you know that there is always something for you to fall back to when the time comes. The logic to real estate is to purchase a property, watch it appreciate while you focus on other things as they say the best time to invest in real estate is now”

President of the Nigeria Football Federation,  Amaju  Pinnick also noted that ; “from every weekly allowance you get, you can set aside a part of it and invest. I openly endorse this insightful initiative that Revolution Plus team has brought to us today; everything you do in real estate is an investment, whether you choose to buy and build or just buy and resell, it is always a win-win situation. Nothing will give me more joy than to see that every one of you properly positioned for the future.

The captain of the team, Ahmed Musa further urged his team members to invest with RevolutionPlus Property as he is also an active investor in real estates.

Adding to the festivity of the day, the GMD of RevolutionPlus property awarded the sum of N2 million to celebrate the team’s win over Liberia; in a bid to further boost morale, he also promised that for every goal scored by the Super Eagles against Cape Verde at their African Cup of Nation Qualifier match they will get a million naira

Hakan Calhanoglu hit a stunning goal on his Inter Milan debut and Edin Dzeko followed suit as new coach Simone Inzaghi was treated by his team to a 4-0 win.

They beat Genoa on Saturday for a dazzling opening day win to the new Italian Serie A season.

After defecting from AC Milan to join the Rossoneri’s city rivals in the close season, Calhanoglu also managed an assist at San Siro, setting up the opener for Milan Skriniar.

This was about as ideal an opening-day outcome as former Lazio boss Inzaghi could have imagined, with his team two goals to the good inside a quarter of an hour.

This did make light of the changes which have followed their Scudetto success last season.

Arturo Vidal got the third in the second half before Dzeko marked his Inter Milan bow with a classic header in the 87th minute.

Inzaghi’s predecessor Antonio Conte quit in May, Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi have departed in big-money deals.

As recently as Friday the influential technical chief Gabriele Oriali was “relieved” of his duties.

But this did not look like a team in crisis.

Veteran striker Dzeko has arrived from Roma, and both he and Calhanoglu starred here, clicking immediately.

Stefano Sensi slotted in just behind targetman Dzeko in a 3-5-1-1 formation, but it was a defender who made the sixth-minute breakthrough.

Calhanoglu notched nine assists for AC Milan in Serie A last season.

His first for the Nerazzurri arrived when his whipped corner-kick from the right was headed powerfully into the left corner of the Genoa goal by Skriniar.

Genoa’s marking left a lot to be desired, but there was little they could do to prevent Inter Milan stretching their lead in the 14th minute with a delicious goal from Calhanoglu.

He collected a short pass from Dzeko and thrashed a 25-yard shot into the bottom right corner.

Dzeko hit the crossbar with a deflected shot on the turn from Matteo Darmian’s cross, and Ivan Perisic was denied a goal by a VAR offside verdict.

That was after he sprinted through and beat Salvatore Sirigu, who had earlier saved well from Marcelo Brozovic.

Perisic was again marginally offside before he teed up Calhanoglu to rifle into the top left corner after the interval, and that meant another Inter Milan goal did not stand.

They found a third goal in the 74th minute though, substitute Vidal drilling in from close range after Dzeko’s shot was parried out.

Nicolo Barella teased the ball into Vidal and he converted, with Dzeko later meeting Vidal’s delicious delivery and making no mistake.

Just like Inter Milan all afternoon.

Borussia Dortmund suffered an early blow to their Bundesliga title aspirations when they lost 1-2 at combative Freiburg on Saturday.

Superb goals from Vincenzo Grifo and Roland Sallai put Freiburg clear with Borussia Dortmund only cutting the deficit via an own goal as big striker Erling Haaland had a rare off day.

“I think Freiburg…deserved the win. We had great chances to equalise at 1-0,” Borussia Dortmund coach Marco Rose said. “It is always difficult in Freiburg.”

Promoted Bochum beat Mainz 2-0, leaders Wolfsburg fought back to win 2-1 at Hertha Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen overpowered Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0 as Yann Sommer had a night to forget.

Eintracht Frankfurt drew 0-0 with Augsburg and Greuther Fuerth were held 1-1 by Arminia Bielefeld in their first ever Bundesliga meeting.

RB Leipzig beat Stuttgart 4-0 on Friday while champions Bayern Munich host Cologne on Sunday when Hoffenheim also face Union Berlin.

Borussia Dortmund began in Freiburg with Mats Hummels only fit enough for the bench, meaning midfielder Axel Witsel had to continue in central defence.

Netherlands winger Donyell Malen meanwhile made his first start since joining from PSV Eindhoven.

The visitors were stunned after just 6 minutes when Grifo bent in the perfect free-kick to give Freiburg the lead.

Borussia Dortmund had chances but poor finishing, including from Haaland, and Jude Bellingham striking the post meant it stayed 1-0 at the break.

England’s Bellingham then lost the ball in midfield and a superb counter-attack from Freiburg was expertly finished off by Sallai on 53 minutes.

An unfortunate own goal from Yannik Keitel under pressure from Bellingham soon after gave Borussia Dortmund hope, but they failed to really push for an equaliser.

“We threw everything at the ball in front of our goal and in front of theirs,” said Freiburg’s Christian Guenter, who set a new club appearance record in his 237th Bundesliga game.

Borussia Dortmund had started the season strongly last weekend under new coach Rose with a 5-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

But they lost the Super Cup 3-1 to Bayern on Tuesday.

Bayer Leverkusen made a quick start with Gladbach goalkeeper Sommer, impressive at Euro 2020 for Switzerland and in the 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich last week, unlucky.

He was unfortunate to see Mitchel Bakker’s drive come off the post, hit his leg and roll in.

Patrik Schick then blasted in the home side’s second on eight minutes after good work from Moussa Diaby, although Sommer again could arguably have done better.

Marcus Thuram and Stefan Lainer went off injured in the first half for lacklustre Gladbach.

Borussia Moenchengladbach could have got back into the game if Lars Stindl’s penalty kick had not been saved by Lukas Hradecky.

Diaby’s deflected effort after the break sealed their fate before Sommer let a late Nadiem Amiri effort creep over the line.

Promoted Bochum celebrated their first home game in the Bundesliga since 2010 in front of near packed stands.

Fans were treated to a wonder goal from Gerrit Holtmann against his old side on 21 minutes.

He picked up the ball midway through Mainz’s half and dribbled through almost the entire defence before nutmegging Robin Zentner.

Bochum, who lost 1-0 at Wolfsburg in their season opener last weekend, made it 2-0 through Sebastian Polter’s header on 56 minutes.

This was as they bossed a Mainz side who won last weekend against Leipzig despite a raft of coronavirus absences.

Wolfsburg are top after two weeks of action, the only side with six points while Hertha Berlin are the sole team on zero.

Hosts Hertha Berlin lost Kevin Prince Boateng to injury in the first half but went ahead thanks to Dodi Lukebakio’s penalty kick.

Wolfsburg hit back through Ridle Baku’s near-post strike, with goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow at fault.

New signing Lukas Nmecha grabbed the winner off the bench for the Wolves on 88 minutes.

New coach Mark van Bommel’s strong Bundesliga start contrasts with his substitution error which led his side to be kicked out of the German Cup first round.
